The smartXR lab is equipped with a comprehensive range of Mixed Reality infrastructure, including AR, MR, and VR Head-Mounted Displays from Microsoft, HTC, and Varjo. Our lab utilizes an Optical Tracking system (OptiTrack) for full body motion tracking and surgical instrument tracking (NDI), as well as Electromagnetic Tracking Systems (NDI), 3D scanners (Shinning 3D and Artec3D), and Printers (Creality). Through our collaboration with IKIM, we combine AI and XR applications to advance the field. Additionally, we house two Aldebaran robots and the latest US scanner from GE Healthcare. The Sauer Laboratory for Clinical Research And Real-World Evidence (CARE) leverages clinical data from Essen University Hospital and global ICU datasets to generate novel insights for use at the bedside. We combine clinical knowledge with sound methodological approaches, focusing on causal inference and machine learning.

Creating a high-quality dataset is a crucial part of any machine learning project. Annotation Lab Essen, an organizational unit of the Institute for AI in Medicine and part of Essen University Hospital, benefits from the highest medical expertise and specializes in the annotation of medical data (images, text and beyond).

Machine learning has the potential for tremendous health innovations, but applying it in healthcare poses novel and interesting challenges. Data privacy is paramount, applications require high confidence in model quality, and practitioners demand explainable and comprehensible models. Ultimately, practitioners and patients alike must be able to trust these methods. In our research group on Trustworthy Machine Learning we tackle these challenges, investigating novel approaches to privacy-preserving federated learning, the theoretical foundations of deep learning, and collaborative training of explainable models.

The AI-guided Therapies research group works on cutting-edge Machine Learning (ML) methods covering the whole pipeline from medical data processing to bringing medical information into the Operation Room (OR). Besides classical navigation approaches, they incorporate the whole Mixed Reality (MR) spectrum, from Augmented Reality (AR) to a complete immersion via Virtual Reality (VR).
