Gijs Luijten studierte Technical Medicine an der Universität Twente mit Spezialisierung auf medizinische Bildgebung und Intervention sowie frühe AR-Anwendungen für die MKG-Chirurgie und die Brustrekonstruktion mit freiem Lappen. Er promoviert an der Fakultät für Informatik der Universität Duisburg-Essen. Am IKIM am Universitätsklinikum Essen leitet er mit das smartXR-Lab, wirkt am ZvRM mit und entwickelt XR-, Ultraschall- und KI-Werkzeuge für chirurgische Diagnostik und Intervention sowie zur Unterstützung von Forschenden. Er war Gastwissenschaftler an der TU Graz und der Medizinischen Universität Graz, hat ShapeMI, MedShapeNet-Tutorials und eine ISBI-Inpainting-Challenge mitorganisiert und betreut Bachelor- und Masterstudierende. Mit ONCOverse konzentriert er sich darauf, die Versorgung von Patienten mit Pankreaskrebs durch klinisch nutzbare XR- und KI-Technologien zu verbessern, und unterstützt die wissenschaftliche Community durch Open-Source-Ressourcen und gemeinsame Forschung.
