
Raphael Welsow studied Business Informatics with an early specialization in medical applications, focusing both his bachelor’s coursework and thesis on healthcare technologies. He is currently completing his master’s degree by writing his thesis at IKIM.
Before joining IKIM in 2025, he worked as a volunteer in New York City after the COVID-19 pandemic, mentored software engineering students at the Faculty of Computer Science, and studied at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid with a special focus on medical software.
Raphael received the Dean’s Award 2026 for his master’s project on Generative Virtual Patients, which investigated the use of generative AI for enhancing virtual patient systems in medical education.
At IKIM, Raphael works as a software engineer and researcher on the Medical Application Team. In his research project, he is developing a system that optimizes the identification of eligible patients for clinical studies. Additionally, he contributes to the Ophthalmology Team by developing AI applications that automatically detect eye diseases from OCT data.
Raphael Welsow is responsible for the projects Trialmatcher, MTB-Dashboard, and DIMAC.
His overall goal is to create medical systems that increase the efficiency of disease detection and automate medical workflows for better patient care.
